From Jamie Wolverton Smith on the future of #FlexOnALS:
The Flex On ALS golf tournament was started by Scott’s family and friends to help raise money to go towards Scott’s medical care. It was also an opportunity for his community to enjoy some golf, beers, laughs, and great food at Merchants in Lawrence as well as see Scott. Scott felt an enormous amount of love from his friends and family at this event each year. It meant the world to him. This year, Scott’s friends and family wanted to hold the golf tournament again and graciously allowed me to decide what to do with the money. As someone who has always enjoyed giving over receiving, I finally got an opportunity to pay it forward after all the help I have received in the last 3 years. I decided to use some of the money for the girls’ college funds and give the rest to 3 young families that have been afflicted by ALS and its enormous financial impact. Amazingly, the tournament raised over $30,000 dollars this year!! The money will help one family with a 28-year-old woman who found out she was pregnant the day after she was diagnosed with ALS. Another family with a 36-year-old man who has been fighting ALS since 2020 and has a 5-year-old boy. And the final family, who is from KC, who lost their 50-year-old father to ALS last year and left behind 4 young children. I feel a mix of sadness for their stories as well as an immense amount of joy for being able to help them.
I am going to look into making Flex On ALS an official charity in honor of Scott, so if anyone has any experience with starting a charity, please reach out to me! Thank you!
